IOSH Training

We conduct all of the main IOSH training courses which are IOSH Managing Safely, IOSH Working Safely, IOSH Directing Safely and the refresher courses. We have a number of dates for our public IOSH Managing Safely course (see below) and we can conduct any of the IOSH courses at your premises at times and dates to suit your working schedule. (You only have to have to have 4 or more delegates to make this course even more cost effective to run at your own premises).

IOSH Managing Safely

Aims

To ensure that safety requirements are appreciated by people employed as line managers, and to enable them to review their own departmental systems for safety, introducing new controls or implementing changes as appropriate to ensure safety in the workplace.

Who Should Attend

Managers and supervisors in any sector and any organisation who are required to manage risk and resources within their organisation.

Learning Objectives

On successful completion of the course, delegates should be able to:

  • Explain 'working safely'
  • Explain the component parts of a recognised safety management system such as HSG65, BS 8800, and OHSAS 18001
  • Identify the data and techniques required to produce an adequate record of an incident and demonstrate the procedure for an accident investigation, recognising the human factors involved
  • Describe statutory requirements for reporting and procedures for checking for non-reporting
  • Describe methods of basic trend and epidemiological analysis for reactive monitoring data
  • Define 'hazard' and 'risk', and describe the legal requirements for risk assessment
  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of a quantitative risk assessment technique and the data required for records
  • Describe workplace precaution hierarchies
  • Prepare and use active monitoring checklists and implement schedules for active monitoring, recording results and analysing records
  • Outline the main provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Outline relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and information sources such as the Health and Safety Executive.

Certification

An IOSH 'Managing safely' certificate is awarded to all those who attend the course and successfully complete both the written and practical project.

Understanding of the course material is evaluated by means of a 45-minute written assessment paper consisting of 20 multi-format questions and a practical assessment.

IOSH Directing Safely

The purpose of this programme is to ensure that top level decision-makers develop an appreciation of the moral, financial and legal issues relating to workplace health and safety throughout the management process.

  • Module 1: Aims and Objectives Overview and introduction to the programme
  • Module 2: Health & Safety management good business sense examining the reasons for the promotion of health and safety and focusing on the influential Turnbull Report and the Revitalising Health and Safety strategy.
  • Module 3: Health & Safety getting it wrong raising awareness and understanding of accidents and their causes, consequences and costs.
  • Module 4: Health & Safety getting it right Understanding the principles of effective health & safety management and requirements for compliance with legislation.
  • Module 5: Planning for success identifying the roles of risk assessment and risk control systems in successful planning.
  • Module 6: People your most valuable asset recognising the value of people within the organisation and factors affecting their performance.
  • Module 7: How well are you performing? Exploring methods of measuring performance.
  • Module 8: Improving performance considering ways of improving performance.

  • Understand the main sections of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974, particularly relating to employers, managers, manufacturers, suppliers, designers and importers
  • Appreciate the principles of strategic management and planning
  • Understand the principles and application of safety management systems
  • Explain the concept of continual improvement with regard to health & safety
  • Understand the principles governing the use of workplace precautions, including relevant legislation, the environment and competence issues
  • Appreciate the need for health & safety training
  • Describe the role of safety professionals within the organisation
  • Understand what is meant by active monitoring
  • Identify means of active monitoring
  • Appreciate the importance of identifying key objectives
  • Recognise performance indicators
  • Understand the process of change.

Who should attend

This qualification is to provide Senior Management with a working knowledge of Health and Safety practices.

Certificates

All delegates who successfully pass the examination at the end of this 1 day course will receive an IOSH Certificate.

IOSH Working Safely

Working safely meets the government's guidelines for introductory health and safety training and is a 100 per cent match to the Health and Safety Executive's 'passport' syllabus.
